Box Score Wright State saw an early 18-point lead disappear in the second half, but the Raiders outscored Loyola 27-16 the final 10:31 to defeat the Ramblers 77-66 in Horizon League women's basketball action at the Gentile Center Thursday night.
The lead was just 13-11 until an 18-2 run over a seven-minute span, one that saw six different Raiders score, put WSU up 31-13 with 6:02 remaining in the first half. Wright State, however, went into the break up just 35-25 as the Ramblers closed the period with a 7-2 burst.
WSU shot only 34 percent in the opening 20 minutes, but was six of 15 from three-point range and five of six at the foul line. Loyola shot 32 percent overall and was five of 17 from behind the arc and four for four at the line.
A Shaunda Sandifer layup made it 45-34 four minutes into the second half, only to see the Ramblers follow with a 16-5 run over a five-minute span to tie the game at 50 with 10:45 to play.
LaShawna Thomas, though, put the Raiders ahead to stay with a three on the next possesion and WSU stretched the margin to 64-52 by scoring 11 of the next 13 points, six by Molly Fox. Loyola would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
The Ramblers finished with a slight higher field goal percentage for the game (39-38 percent) and hit 13 of 31 threes compared to nine of 25 for the Raiders, but WSU countered by attempting 12 more shots thanks to a 21-12 turnover differential and a 45-37 rebounding edge.
Wright State also hit 16 of 21 foul shots, 11 of 15 in the second half, while Loyola was a perfect nine for nine. The Raiders led in points in the paint (22-12), points off of turnovers (19-12) and second-chance points (19-8).
Fox led all scorers with 26 points, 17 coming after halftime, and posted a double-double with 13 rebounds and added six steals. Sandifer scored a season-high 19 and also recorded a double-double with 12 boards. Thomas had 10 points, six assists and six rebounds.
Katie Kortekamp hit six threes in pacing Loyola (11-15, 5-10 Horizon) with 18 points while Monica Albano had 17 and Abby Skube 15. Brittany Boeke gathered in 13 rebounds.
Wright State (17-9, 10-5 Horizon) wraps up the Windy City road trip on Saturday with a 4:00 Eastern matchup at UIC.
