Box Score Wright State hit 12 threes and led by 15 with eight minutes to go, but needed a Ta-myra Davis putback with 1.2 seconds left as the Raiders pulled out a 70-68 win over the Butler Bulldogs in Horizon League women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Four Courtney Boyd threes helped WSU build a 14-4 lead 4:22 into the game and the margin was 23-14 on a Molly Fox layup with 7:18 remaining in the first half, but Butler followed with a 10-3 run to close the margin to two.
Maria Bennett, though, answered with a three and Wright State went into halftime up 29-26.
The Raiders shot just 29 percent in the first half, but connected on six of 18 three-pointers while Butler was at 36 percent.
Claire Freeman started the second half with a layup to make it a one-point game, only to see WSU answer with a 13-3 run, six coming from Bennett, to go up 42-31 at the 14:25 mark. The Raiders later extended the advantage to 58-43 as Bennett connected on a three with 8:51 to go.
The Bulldogs stormed back with a 15-4 run over the next four minutes until Bennett hit another three to make it 65-58 with 4:12 remaining. Butler, however, came all the way back with a 10-3 burst to tie the game at 68 on two Chloe Hamilton free throws at the 12.8-second mark.
That set the stage for Davis' game winner as LaShawna Thomas drove along the right side of the lane and missed the jumper and, after gathering the rebound and missing the first try, Davis again got the rebound and converted the putback attempt with 1.2 seconds left.
Butler had one last chance, but a three attempt from midcourt by Mandy McDivitt went off the side of the rim as the game ended.
It was the second straight Saturday that a Raider senior won the game with a last-second shot as Thomas connected on a three on January 29 to give WSU a 77-76 home win over Loyola. With the win, Wright State improves to 7-1 this season on Saturdays.
WSU shot 52 percent from the field the final 20 minutes, including a blistering six of nine from behind the arc, to finish at 39 percent overall. The Raiders were 12 of 27 from three-point range overall, giving them 164 threes on the season, eclipsing the previous school record of 161 set during the 2007-08 campaign (32 games).
Butler shot 36 percent for the game, but was just eight of 31 from three.
Five Raiders scored in double figures, led by Bennett with 17, all but three coming in the second half. Boyd had 15 and Thomas 12 while Davis (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Fox (10 points, 12 rebounds) each posted double-doubles.
Hamilton paced Butler (14-9, 8-3 Horizon) with 15 points while Alyssa Pittman and Brittany Bowen each had 13 and Devin Brierly 12.
Wright State (14-8, 7-4 Horizon) is back on the road next Saturday for a 2:00 game at Detroit.
