Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team picked up two one-run victories over Canisius Sunday at Nischwitz Stadium, defeating the Golden Griffins 2-1 in the opener and rallying for a 4-3 win in the second game.
The Raiders tallied a run in the first inning of game one as Sam Picchiotti led off with a double, moved up to third on a Corey Davis bunt and scored on a Jake Hibberd sacrifice fly to center.
It stayed that way through six innings as WSU starter Michael Woytek retired the first 18 batters he faced. Canisius, however, tied the game in the seventh as Will Chomicki broke up the perfect game with a double to the fence in left and later scored on a Sean Jamieson ground out.
Wright State, though, answered with the game-winner in the bottom of the inning. With two out and no one on base, Zach Tanner had a hit to right and after he went to third on a Ryan Ashe single through the right side, Tristan Moore drove in Tanner with a hit to right.
Canisius posed a threat in the ninth with runners at first and second with one out, but the Raider defense would come up big to preserve the win. A Drew Pettit single through the right side looked like it would tie the game, but right fielder Moore threw a strike to catcher Davis for the second out at the plate. Davis then threw to shortstop Justin Kopale, who threw to first baseman Hibberd to get Pettit off of first for the third out to end the game.
Woytek (2-1) picked up the win by going the first 7.2 innings, giving up just four hits and no walks while striking out two. Michael Schum earned his second save of the year in pitching the final 1.1 innings.
Game two was another pitcher's duel, this time between Max Friedman and Canisius starter Chris Cox, as the game was scoreless until the Golden Griffins scored twice in the sixth.
The Raiders tied it in the bottom of the seventh on an Ashe two-out, two-run single to center, only to see Canisius go back in front with a run in the ninth.
Wright State rallied for three runs in the second game Saturday to defeat Oakland 7-6 and put together a similar rally on Sunday to complete the sweep. With one out, walks to Kyle Mossbarger and Tanner along with Dan Marsh being hit by a pitch loaded the bases. Ashe hit a sacrifice fly to left to tie it and Kody Krizman followed with the game-winner, a single to left to drive in Tanner.
Schum (4-1), who picked up the win in the comeback on Saturday, did the same on Sunday by pitching the final inning. Offensively, Davis had three hits while Picchiotti had two.
Wright State (8-6), winners of four straight, seven of its last eight and eight of its last 10, hosts Toledo in a single game Wednesday at 6:30.
