Hibberd Grand Slam Gives Baseball 5-3 Win at Southeast Missouri

Box Score

Down 3-1 with two outs in the ninth, Jake Hibberd hit a 3-2 pitch over the fence in right center for a grand slam to give the Wright State baseball team a dramatic 5-3 win at Southeast Missouri Sunday afternoon.

After the Redhawks scored a run in the third, the Raiders answered with a run of their own in the top of the fourth. Zach Tanner led off with a single up the middle and moved up to second on a Tristan Moore bunt. One out later, Dan Marsh delivered a hit to right center to drive in Tanner.

Southeast Missouri looked to be in control with a 3-1 lead as the Redhawks scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, but that all changed in the ninth.

Sam Picchiotti doubled to right to start the frame and after a Marsh walk, Justin Kopale bunted both runners into scoring position. Ryan Ashe lined out to short for the second out, but Corey Davis kept the inning alive with a full-count walk on a nine-pitch at bat.

That brought Hibberd to the plate, who drove a 3-2 pitch over the fence in right center for his first home run of the season, a grand slam to give WSU a 5-3 lead.

Michael Schum then closed out Southeast Missouri in the bottom of the ninth for his third save of the season. Taylor Braun (1-0) picked up the win with an inning of scoreless relief. Overall, the Raider bullpen of Schum, Braun, Tanner Howell and Joey Hoelzel pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, giving up just four hits.

Offensively, Hibberd finished with three hits, including the grand slam, while Tanner and Kopale each had two hits.

Wright State (10-7), winners of nine of its last 11 games and 10 of its last 13, heads to Xavier on Tuesday for a 3:00 game before opening Horizon League play this weekend with a three-game series against Youngstown State at Nischwitz Stadium.
