Box Score The Wright State baseball team took a 3-2 lead on a Zach Tanner three-run home run in the fifth, only to see Xavier scored two unearned runs in the seventh as the Musketeers defeated the Raiders 4-3 Tuesday afternoon at Hayden Field.
Xavier took the early lead with a pair of runs in the third before WSU took the lead in the fifth. With one out, Kyle Mossbarger walked and a Sam Picchiotti single to right put runners on the corners. Zach Tanner followed on the next pitch with a line drive home run over the left field fence, his first as a Raider, to make it 3-2.
The Musketeers regained the lead with two unearned runs in the seventh, but the Raiders looked to have a rally going in the ninth. After pinch-hitter Corey Davis led off with a single through the left side, Picchiotti dropped a one-out single into left center and advanced to second as the throw went into third.
The rally came up empty, however, as a squeeze attempt by Tanner went back to pitcher Seth Willoughby, who threw to catcher Ryan Bellamy to retire Davis at the plate. Jake Hibberd then flied out to right to end the game.
Picchiotti and Tristan Moore each had two hits to lead the WSU offense.
Wright State (10-8) opens Horizon League play this weekend with a three-game series against Youngstown State at Nischwitz Stadium, starting with a single game Friday at 6:30.
