Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team split a Horizon League doubleheader with Youngstown State Saturday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium, taking the opener 8-2 before falling 7-3 in the nightcap.
WSU opened the first game scoring with three in the first. After Tristan Moore led off with a double, Sam Picchiotti drove him in with a sacrifice fly. Jake Hibberd then doubled and scored on a hit to right off the bat of Corey Davis. Ryan Ashe later had a single to knock in Davis with the third run.
The Raiders added another in the second on an RBI single from Moore, only to see Youngstown State cut the deficit to 4-2 with two in the top of the third. Wright State, though, answered with two in its half of the inning as Dan Marsh singled in Ashe, who had doubled, and later scored on a Kyle Mossbarger triple to right center.
WSU rounded out the scoring in the fifth on a two-run single by Picchiotti.
Michael Woytek (3-2) went the first seven innings for the victory, scattering eight hits while striking out three. Offensively, Hibberd finished with four hits while Moore, Zach Tanner and Mossbarger each had two.
The win was also the 200th in head coach Rob Cooper's career. In his seventh season with Wright State, Cooper is now 200-169, including NCAA appearances in 2006 and 2009 and last year's Horizon League regular-season title.
The Penguins scored first in the second game with a run in the second before the Raiders went in front with two in the bottom of the inning. After Davis walked and Tanner was hit by a pitch, both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Marsh reached on an infield error to drive in the first run and he and Tammer pulled off a double steal to give WSU the lead.
Youngstown State, however, went in front to stay with two in the sixth and four more in the seventh. Wright State picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Picchiotti sacrifice fly, but could get no closer.
Hibberd added three more hits in the second game to finish with seven on the day while Marsh had two hits.
Wright State (12-9, 2-1 Horizon) hosts Bowling Green on Wednesday at 6:30 before welcoming in Cleveland State next weekend for a three-game series.
