Box Score The Wright State baseball team stretched its winning streak to eight Tuesday afternoon with a 5-2 win over Miami as part of the Joe Nuxhall Classic at the University of Cincinnati's Marge Schott Stadium.
WSU opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third. Ryan Ashe led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a Justin Kopale bunt. One out later, Dan Marsh plated Ashe with a hit to center.
Miami answered with a run in its half of the third, but the Raiders quickly regained the lead, this time for good, with two in the fourth. Zach Tanner reached on a throwing error to start the frame and walks to Kyle Mossbarger and Ashe loaded the bases. After a pop up, Sam Picchiotti doubled down the left field line to knock in Tanner and Mossbarger to give Wright State a 3-1 advantage.
The margin grew to 4-1 in the fifth as Moore singled up the middle, went to second on a Davis bunt and scored on a Tanner hit to left.
The RedHawks picked up a run in the sixth before the Raiders rounded out the scoring with one in the seventh. Moore reached on an error to start the inning and later scored as Mossbarger also reached on an error.
Freshman Joey Hoelzel (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win by pitching the first seven innings, giving up six hits and two runs. Taylor Braun followed with a scoreless eighth and Michael Schum earned his fourth save of the season by blanking Miami in the ninth with a strikeout.
Offensively, Picchiotti had two hits and two RBI while Moore and Tanner each had two hits as well.
Wright State (20-9) will face Cincinnati (16-14), a 6-5 winner over Xavier in the second game, for the Nuxhall Classic title Wednesday at 7:00.
