Box Score Down 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Wright State scored the final six runs of the game, including two in the bottom of the ninth, to pull out a 6-5 win over Valparaiso Sunday at Nischwitz Stadium. The win moves the Raiders back into first place in the Horizon League standings.
The Crusaders opened the scoring with a run in the third and expanded the lead to 5-0 with four in the fourth, the big blow being a two-run single by Steven Scoby.
WSU, however, started on its comeback in the bottom of the inning, tallying a run as Tristan Moore doubled, went to third on a throwing error by the right fielder and scoring as Kyle Mossbarger reached on an error.
The Raiders took advantage of another error in the fifth in scoring two more runs. After a Zach Tanner triple and a Dan Marsh double produced the first run, Moore reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, allowing Marsh to cross the plate and cut the deficit to 5-3.
Wright State drew to within a run in the sixth as Ryan Ashe singled through the right side, stole second, and scored on Andrew Elliott's hit through the right side.
Both teams posed threats in the seventh and eighth, but it remained 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Marsh flew out to left to start the frame, but Jake Hibberd followed by jumping on the first pitch and crushing a solo homer to left to tie the game, his eighth of the season. Two pitches later, Moore doubled to the gap in left center and he moved up to third as Corey Davis flied to center for the second out.
Mossbarger then delivered the game-winner as, on a 1-2 pitch, he hit a grounder up the middle for an infield hit as Moore came across the plate.
Michael Schum (8-2) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out one. Schum, along with reliever Michael Meintel, blanked the Crusaders over 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits and a walk while fanning three.
Offensively, Tanner and Moore each had three hits to pace the Raider offense while Hibberd had two.
With the win, WSU moved into first place in the Horizon League standings at 13-5, a half-game ahead of Valparaiso's 13-6. Both teams have seven league games remaining over the next two weeks.
The win also improved Wright State's overall record to 30-14, marking the sixth time in as many seasons that the Raiders have won 30 or more games under head coach Rob Cooper. Overall, WSU has won 30 or more games in a season 20 times in the program's 41-year history.
The Raiders have five road games on the schedule for this week, starting with a Wednesday matchup at Bowling Green starting at 3:00.
