Box Score Down two in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and no one on base, the Wright State baseball team rallied for three runs to pull out an 8-7 win over UIC in the Horizon League opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.
It was all WSU early as the Raiders built a 5-0 lead through four innings. Wright State went up 3-0 in the first on a three-run home run to left center off the bat of Andrew McCafferty, his first of the season, and after adding another in the third on doubles by McCafferty and Kieston Greene, tacked on another in the fourth on a Jordan Jackson ground out.
The lead was still 5-0 until UIC scored six runs, five of those unearned, in the sixth to take the lead. The Flames added another run in the seventh and looked to be in position for the win as the first two Raider batters were retired in the bottom of the ninth.
Joe Ford, though, was hit by an 0-2 pitch to start the rally and after Brad Macciocchi singled up the middle, McCafferty was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Michael Timm followed with a single to drive in Ford and Macciocchi and tie the game and Greene followed with a hit to plate Timm with the winning run.
Greene finished with three hits and two RBI to pace the Raider offense while Macciocchi and McCafferty each had two hits.
Wright State (7-9, 1-0 Horizon) wraps up the three-game series with the Flames Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
