McCafferty Home Run Lifts Baseball Past Milwaukee

Box Score

After Milwaukee took the lead with a two-out home run in the top of the ninth, Andrew McCafferty answered with a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to give the Wright State baseball team a dramatic 5-4 Horizon League win Friday night at Nischwitz Stadium.

The Panthers scored an unearned run in the first, only to see WSU go in front with two in the second.  Joe Ford led off with a double to right center and after Jack Murphy was hit by a pitch, a Jason DeFevers bunt put both runners into scoring position.  One out later, Brad Macciocchi delivered a two-run triple to straight away center to drive in both Ford and Murphy.

Milwaukee regained the advantage at 3-2 with single runs in the third and fourth and it stayed that way until the Raiders tied it with an unearned run in the fifth as a throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed Michael Timm to score from second base.

The game remained tied at 3-3 until the ninth.  Taylor Braun, who came in relief of WSU starter Joey Hoelzel in that inning, retired the first two batters and had two strikes on Mitch Ghelfi.  Ghelfi, however, worked the count full and then hit a line shot down the right field line that just cleared the fence for a solo home run, his first of the season, and a 4-3 lead.

Jeff Limbaugh reached on an error to start the bottom of the ninth, but Milwaukee reliever Tell Taylor retired the next two batters.  That brought McCafferty to the plate and, on a 1-1 pitch, he homered to right, his second of the year, to give the Raiders the 5-4 win.

Braun (4-1) picked up the win after Hoelzel went the first eight innings, scattering 11 hits and a walk in allowing two earned run with two strikeouts.

Offensively, Timm finished with three hits while Sean Murphy had two.

Wright State (16-16, 10-2 Horizon) and Milwaukee (10-13, 4-2 Horizon) continue the three-game series with a single game Saturday at 2:00.
