Box Score The Wright State baseball team moved one step closer to clinching the Horizon League regular-season title Saturday with a 16-11 win over Youngstown State at Nischwitz Stadium.
WSU jumped out to an early 7-0 lead by scoring two in the second, four in the third and one more in the fourth. Joe Ford had a two-run double to highlight the third and Andrew McCafferty drove in the Raider run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.
The Penguins cut into the deficit in the fifth with four runs, only to see Wright State answer with three in the bottom of the frame as Ford and Michael Timm each doubled in a run and Jeff Limbaugh had a RBI single.
The Raiders then went up 16-4 with six in the sixth as Jack Murphy singled in two, Timm doubled in a run and McCafferty had a RBI single.
Youngstown State closed to within five with a run in the seventh and six in the eighth, but would get no closer as E.J. Trapino pitched a scoreless ninth to end it.
Jack Van Horn (2-2) allowed one run in three innings of relief with six strikeouts to pick up the win while on offense, Ford had three RBI and four runs scored, Limbaugh went four for four with two runs scored, Timm had three hits and three runs scored and Sean Murphy three hits and three runs scored.
With the win and UIC defeating Milwaukee 15-7 on Saturday, Wright State is just one win or a UIC loss away from clinching the Horizon League regular-season crown for the first time since sharing the title with the Flames in 2011. The Raiders last won it outright in 2010.
Wright State (27-18, 20-2 Horizon) wraps up the three-game series with Youngstown State Sunday at 1:00.
