Women Pull Away to Defeat Cleveland State

Box Score

Down 12 early, the women's basketball team ended the first half on a 31-8 run and added a 24-6 burst in the second half to defeat Cleveland State 82-65 in Horizon League action Saturday afternoon at WSU's Nutter Center.

It was all Vikings in the early going as CSU jumped out to a 17-5 advantage just five minutes into the contes by hitting seven of their first eight shots, including threes from Kiersten Green and Cori Coleman.

Another Coleman triple made it 20-8 before Wright State started its comeback with seven straight points from Richelle van der Keijl.  After two Imani Gordon free throws broke that string, WSU followed with 13 unanswered points to go up 28-22 with 3:27 remaining in the first half.

Cleveland State cut the deficit to two on two occasions until the Raiders tallied the final nine points of the period, four of those coming from Tay'ler Mingo, to take a 39-28 halftime lead.

After hitting seven of its first eight shots, CSU connected on just three of 21 attempts the rest of the half to end up at 35 percent while WSU also shot 35 percent.  Wright State, though, had 11 more attempts thanks to forcing nine turnovers while committing only one, resulting in a 14-0 differential in points off of turnovers.

The Vikings again came out strong to start the second half, trimming the margin to 46-45 with 12:48 to play, only to see the Raiders answer with a 24-6 run over the next seven minutes, eight by Abby Jump and seven from Mingo, to lead 70-51.  Cleveland State would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

The shooting percentages were nearly identical as WSU shot 39 percent and CSU 38 percent, but Wright State had 12 more attempts than Cleveland State as the Vikings committed 19 turnovers to just six for the Raiders.  WSU led 38-22 in points in the paint, 28-2 in points off of turnovers, 29-2 in bench points and was 21 of 25 at the foul line while CSU was 11 of 17 at the stripe.

Mingo, for the third straight game and sixth time on the season, reached the 30-point plateau as she finished with 31 points, including a perfect 13 of 13 at the foul line.  She also posted a double-double with 10 assists and added six steals.

The 31 points give Mingo 1007 in 55 games as a Raider, making her the 20th 1000-point scorer in school history.  Overall, the senior guard has 1092 in her collegiate career.

van der Keijl added a season-high 19 points off the bench, bettering the 14 she scored against Otterbein on December 15, while Courtney Boyd chipped in 12 points, Tayler Stanton 11 rebounds and Breanna Stucke nine rebounds.

Coleman paced Cleveland State (10-8, 2-3 Horizon) with 23 points while Alexis Eckles posted a double-double of 14 points and 12 boards.  Gordon added 13 points and nine rebounds and Green had 11 points.

Wright State (15-5, 4-2 Horizon) heads to Rochester, Michigan, on Thursday, January 29, for a 7:00 contest at Oakland.
