Box Score 2 The Wright State softball team dropped a pair of games in the final day of the Sand Dollar Classic Sunday in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The Raiders lost to Belmont 8-7 and Murray State 3-0.
WSU opened the scoring in game one with a run in the first. Jess Gorman led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a Ashton Salyers grounder and scored on a sacrifice fly by Libby Pfeffer.
Belmont took the lead with two runs in the first and another in the second, only to see Wright State regain the advantage with four runs in the third. Gorman again started the rally with a walk and a steal of second. After Salyers reached on an infield hit, Pfeffer connected on a three-run home run to left to make it 4-3.
WSU added another run in the inning on a wild pitch, but the Bruins answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the third to go back in front and added two more in the sixth to extend the margin to 8-5.
The Raiders closed to within one in the seventh on a two-run single by Kortney Tackett and had two runners on with one out, but could not tie it as the game ended on a popup and a caught stealing.
Pfeffer had two hits and drove in four to pace the Wright State offense while Kaitlyn Kite also had two hits.
In the second game, it was a scoreless pitcher's duel between Ashley Sharp and Murray State's Mason Robinson until the Racers scored three times in the top of the seventh. The Raiders had the potential tying run come to the plate in their half of the seventh after Macey Gunther doubled and Hanna Floyd walked, but a ground out and a line out ended the threat.
Gorman had two hits to lead the offense while Sharp scattered six hits in a complete-game effort with two strikeouts.
Wright State (0-9) continues its Spring Break southern swing on Wednesday, March 4, with a doubleheader at nationally-ranked Georgia starting at 4:00.
