Women Set Scoring Record in Semifinal Win

Box Score

The Wright State women's basketball team set a Horizon League Tournament record for points in a game Friday night as the Raiders defeated Cleveland State 99-87 in semifinal action at Green Bay.

Alexis Eckles opened the scoring with a jumper, but that turned out to be the only lead of the game for the Vikings as Tay'ler Mingo answered with two foul shots and Symone Denham connected on a layup to put WSU up for good.

An 8-0 run, four each from Mingo and Tayler Stanton, extended the Raider advantage to 14-4 and after Cleveland State cut the deficit to four with six straight points, Wright State pushed the margin back into double figures at 22-12 on another Denham layup with 9:45 remaining in the first half.

Cori Coleman hit a three at the six-minute mark to make it 31-22, only to see WSU close out the period with a 17-7 run, six coming from Lexi Smith, to go up 48-29 at the half.

The Raiders shot 49 percent in the opening 20 minutes compared to 25 percent for CSU.

Wright State's lead was 81-61 with 6:45 to play, but the Vikings trimmed the margin to nine with a 20-9 run over the next 5:30.  Cleveland State, though, would get no closer as the Raiders made nine of 10 foul shots over the final 1:03 to secure the victory.

The 99 points by WSU set a new tournament record for points in a game, eclipsing the 98 scored by Detroit against Milwaukee on March 7, 1997.

Both teams shot 40 percent from the field in the second half as Wright State finished at 44 percent overall while CSU ended up at 33 percent.  The Raiders led 48-22 in points in the paint, 16-12 in points off of turnovers and 26-20 in second-chance points.

For the second straight game, Mingo posted a double-double in leading WSU as she had 27 points, 17 in the second half, and dished out 10 assists.  Denham, for the second consecutive contest, set a career high in scoring as she had 19, bettering the 15 she had in the quarterfinals against Oakland on Wednesday.

Three other Raiders scored in double figures as Smith posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 points off the bench as did Breanna Stucke with 11 points and 10 boards.  Courtney Boyd chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

Kiersten Green paced Cleveland State (19-12) with 21 points, all but one coming after halftime, including six three-pointers, while Coleman had 20, Eckles a double-double of 17 points and 19 rebounds, Imani Gordon 14 and Allison Mitchell 11 off the bench.

Wright State (25-7) will take on top seed and host Green Bay (27-4) in the championship game Sunday at 3:00 Eastern, a game that will be televised live on ESPNU.  The winner receives an automatic bid to the next week's NCAA Tournament.
