Box Score Five players scored nine or more points as the Wright State women's basketball team used a balanced attack in rolling to a 93-65 Horizon League win at Cleveland State Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 6-4 early, the Raiders closed out the opening quarter with an 18-4 run over the final 6:52, a run that saw six different WSU players score, including five by Symone Simmons.
A 12-0 burst in the second quarter that featured a pair of threes by Emily Vogelpohl extended the advantage to 41-17 en route to a 44-24 halftime lead.
Wright State shot 51 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes while holding the Vikings to just 24 percent.
The Raiders continued to build on the margin in the third stanza, outscoring CSU 28-17, and were up as much as 85-52 on a Richelle van der Keijl layup with 3:40 to play in the game.
WSU shot 49 percent overall and hit 10 of 25 three-pointers, seven of 14 in the second half, while Cleveland State shot 34 percent for the game. The Raiders also led 44-26 points in the paint, 22-13 in points off of turnovers, 20-8 in second-chance points and 14-8 in fast-break points.
Vogelpohl led Wright State with 19 points while Kim Demmings had 18, Lexi Smith a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds off the bench and van der Keijl 10 points. Symone Denham added nine as all 11 Raiders that played scored.
Ashanti Abshaw paced Cleveland State (4-15, 1-8 Horizon) with a near double-double of 18 points and nine rebounds while Brooke Smith added 12 points.
Wright State (16-6, 6-3 Horizon) hits the road again next weekend for a pair of games, facing Valparaiso on Thursday, February 4, and UIC on Saturday, February 6, with both starting at 8:00 Eastern.
