The Wright State women's basketball team will take its 8-2 record to Belmont Monday and to Georgia Thursday to end its non-conference slate.
Wright State
The Raiders have won five straight, coming off a 99-36 victory over Cincinnati Christian and a 72-60 win at Kent State. Senior
Chelsea Welch (20.1) leads four Raiders scoring in double-figures:
Mackenzie Taylor (12.7),
Emily Vogelpohl (10.3) and
Symone Simmons (10.2). Along with those four starters,
Lexi Smith averages 9.3 points and 7.0 rebounds. Simmons leads WSU with an 8.7 rebounds average.
WSU won the only other meeting with Belmont 62-55 on a neutral court in Bloomington, IN on December 19, 1997 62-55. Georgia won the only meeting with the Raiders on December 20, 2015 at Wright State 63-57.
Belmont
The Bruins are also riding a five-game winning streak but with a 9-2 overall record and 4-0 at home. Thursday night, BU beat Arkansas State 83-52 after defeating cross-town Lipscomb 91-59. Kylee Smith (18.4) leads the Bruins in scoring with Darby Maggard (16.5) and Sally McCabe (13.7). Three Bruins averaged just under eight rebounds a game. As a team, BU is averaging 80.0 points while the Raiders are at 82.2 points per game.
In the preseason poll for the Ohio Valley Conference, Belmont was selected to win the OVC while Smith, Maggard and McCabe were chosen to the preseason team and Maggard and McCabe were co-Players of the year.
Georgia
The Raiders stay on the road to play at Georgia Thursday at 1 pm. The Bulldogs, currently 8-1, will host Georgia Tech Sunday and Howard Tuesday. Against a common opponent, WSU defeated Tennessee Tech 82-59 while UGA won 56-48. Mackenzie Engram (12.6) and Caliya Robinson (12.2) lead the Bulldogs in scoring. Robinson was named to the SEC preseason second team while Georgia was picked to finish eighth.
