The Wright State baseball team wrapped up its regular season and Horizon League schedule with a doubleheader sweep over Oakland on Saturday afternoon, taking game one 8-7 in walkoff fashion before a 14-6 victory in the finale.
The Raiders (29-11, 28-4 HL) are now currently scheduled to be off next weekend as the rest of the Horizon League wraps up regular season and League play. Wright State had already clinched the regular season title prior to this weekend's action and will host the 2021 Horizon League Baseball Championships from May 27-29 at Nischwitz Stadium.
In the opener on Saturday, the Raiders fell behind 6-0 after the top of the first, but held Oakland to one run and two hits over the final six innings while chipping away at the deficit. Wright State got on the board with a pair of runs in the second inning, first via
Zane Harris' double down the left field line to plate
Alec Sayre before Harris scored later in the inning on
Damon Dues' sacrifice fly.
After an Oakland ruin in the top of the third, the Raiders pulled within one run with a four-run fourth inning.
Justin McConnell doubled down the right field line to plate a run before scoring on
Quincy Hamilton's RBI groundout. Moments later,
Sammy Sass connected on a no doubt, two-run homer down the left field line to pull the Raiders to within one at 7-6. In the fifth,
Alex Alders opened the inning with a single before an error and a sacrifice bunt moved him over to third base with one out, where he scored on a Dues groundout to tie the game.
Konner Piotto doubled to deep center field to begin the bottom of the seventh before pinch runner
Cameron Rountree was moved over to third on a McConnell fly out. Dues ended the game and gave the Raiders their first walkoff win since March 17, 2019 when he sent a 1-0 pitch into center field for the win.
Zane Harris and Piotto each finished with three hits as both had a double, while Dues and Alders had two hits apiece, with Dues driving in three RBI. Reliever
Jay Luikart earned the win with two perfect innings out of the bullpen with a pair of strikeouts. Starter
Austin Cline didn't factor into the decision after allowing seven runs on eight hits, but allowed just the two hits after the first inning, along with tallying five of his six strikeouts over his final four innings of work.
Hayden Nierman was saddled with the loss for Oakland after allowing the go-ahead run in just 0.2 inning of work. Lorenzo Elion and Luke Malmanger each had two RBI in the loss, while no Oakland player had more than one hit.
Oakland once again jumped ahead early in game two, plating five runs in the top of the first, before Wright State took the lead with four runs in the third and five runs in the fourth frame.
The third inning saw Hamilton drive in a run with an RBI single before he and Dues executed a double steal as Dues crossed the plate. Alders' two-run double later in the inning gave the Raiders the lead for good. In the fourth,
Tyler Black drew a based loaded walk to plate a run and Sayre brought in another run with a sacrifice fly before Harris connected for a three-run homer to right field.
After Oakland added one run in the fifth, Wright State tacked on to the lead with a McConnell RBI single in the sixth, a Hamilton no doubt solo homer down the right field line in the seventh, and three runs in the eighth on another RBI single from McConnell and a two-run single from Sass.
McConnell finished with four hits and a pair of RBI, while Hamilton had three hits and two RBI of his own, with Sass and Alders both driving in two runs as well.
Mitch Gremling tossed four innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts, to earn his first win of the season for the Raiders.
Oakland starter Brandon Deans allowed eight runs on six hits and five walks over three-plus innings to get saddled with the loss, while Elion, Malmanger and Michael Stygles all had two hits in the losing effort.
