Â
Smith hit two home runs on the day and now has 45 career homers, surpassing Gabe Snyder's (2015–18) previous program record of 44. The Arcanum, Ohio, native has hit 19 home runs this season, tying himself and Ben Vore (2024) for second-most in single-season program history—just one shy of matching the record set by Andrew Patrick (2023).
Â
Purdue Fort Wayne took an early 6–2 lead through the first four innings. Wright State opened the scoring with an RBI single by JP Peltier in the first inning, and added another run on a sacrifice fly by Will Cook in the second. PFW responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, scoring on a two-run homer, a run-scoring double play, and a bases-loaded walk. The Mastodons added two more in the third with an RBI groundout and a solo homer.
Â
The Raiders surged ahead with an eight-run fifth inning. Braylen Blomquist opened the rally with a two-RBI single to left field. Smith followed with his first home run of the day, a three-run shot that brought in Blomquist and Peltier to take a 7–6 lead. The rally continued with solo home runs from Cam Gilkerson and Cook. Patrick Fultz capped the inning with an RBI double to right field, putting WSU into double digits.
Â
Smith's record-breaking home run came in the sixth, a two-run shot following a single by Blomquist. PFW responded with a solo homer in the bottom half, but Wright State extended its lead again in the seventh when Blomquist drew a bases-loaded walk. The Mastodons chipped away with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
The Raiders added four more in the eighth, beginning with a bases-clearing double to left center by Gus Gregory. Peltier followed with a double to drive in Gregory. PFW answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single to left.
Â
Purdue Fort Wayne completed a dramatic comeback in the ninth, scoring 11 runs to win the series opener. The Mastodons scored three on singles, two on walks, and tied the game at 17 with a two-run double to right. Justin Osterhouse then capped his fourth home run of the day with a walk-off grand slam, ending the day 21–17.
