Â
Wright State (23-23, 16-4 HL) will be back in action Sunday afternoon for the rubber match of its three-game set against Northern Kentucky. First pitch in Highland Heights is slated for 12 p.m.
Â
Keegan Holmstrom got the Raiders on the board with a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. The homer is the first of Holmstrom's collegiate career. Northern Kentucky would respond with one run of their own in the bottom half of the frame, thanks to a solo shot off the bat of Pierce Baurle.
Â
Wright State and Northern Kentucky would exchange single tallies in the second inning, with the Raiders scoring thanks to a Hunter Warren sacrifice fly. The Norse scored in the bottom half of the frame with an Alex Brazer solo shot.
Â
The Raiders hung their second crooked number of the day with five runs in the top of the third. Gus Gregory would open the scoring in the inning with an RBI single and later came in to score on an error by the third baseman. Andrew Duncan would drive in a run with an RBI single, and then Holmstrom capped off the inning with a two-run single to right. Northern Kentucky would respond with two more runs of their own in the bottom half.
Â
Wright State would strike for four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. The first two runs of the frame would come in to score thanks to back-to-back bases-loaded hit by pitches from Duncan and Holmstrom. A few pitches later, JP Peltier would drive in a pair of his own with a two-run single to center.
Â
Gus Gregory would launch his second homer of the weekend over the right field wall in the top of the fifth inning. The homer is Gregory's fifth of the season and second in as many days. Northern Kentucky would answer back with their third solo shot of the day, this time off the bat of Josh Williams.
Â
After a pair of zeroes in the sixth and seventh innings, Peltier would step up in the top of the eighth and break the game open with a grand slam over the wall in left field. The homer is Peliter's ninth of the season, tying him for the team lead with Cy Turner.
Â
Northern Kentucky would get its fourth solo shot in the bottom of the eighth, but it was too little too late as the Raiders would go on to enact the 10-run rule and win 18-6 in eight innings.
Â
Chet Lax got the start on the mound for the Raiders, picking up his Horizon League-leading ninth win of the season. The left-hander pitched five innings, allowing five runs while striking out five batters. Cooper Ashby was the first man out of the bullpen for the Raiders, pitching two shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts. Nate Shaw came in to pitch the eighth, allowing one run while striking out two to secure the run-rule victory.
