Box Score 2 In a doubleheader that took nearly five hours to complete, Wright State split with Ball State Wednesday at the WSU Softball Field, the Cardinals winning a slugfest in game one 13-11 before the Raiders claimed a 6-2 decision in the nightcap.
The tone for game one was set early as the two teams combined for 11 runs in the first inning. Ball State scored six times, including a two-run single from Alyssa Collins, only to see Wright State answer with five in its half of the frame. Along with a Jherica Williams three-run homer to left center, Mollie Berry tripled in a run and Bridget Henry had an RBI single.
The Raiders then took the lead with three more in the second as Kristen Bradshaw hit a two-run double and later scored as Berry walked and was caught in a rundown between first and second.
Ball State, however, regained the advantage with four in the third, the big blow being a two-run home run by Kamilah Holle, and tacked on three more in the sixth as Holle struck again with another two-run homer.
Wright State narrowed the gap to 13-11 with a two-run Allison Cox double in the sixth and a RBI hit from Louie Haney in the seventh, but could get no closer as Cox lined out to third with the bases loaded to end the game.
Jamie Perkins had three hits and scored three times in the first game, while Haney also had three hits and two runs scored.
In the second game, WSU opened the scoring with two runs in the second. After Perkins led off with a hit to right center and went to third on a Haney double to left, she scored on a Williams sacrifice fly to left and Haney later came in on a fielder's choice play off the bat of Bradshaw.
Williams then extended the lead to 4-0 in the third with her ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left. Those nine home runs are the most ever by a Wright State player in a season, eclipsing the eight hit by Amanda Cody in 2006.
With six RBI on the day, Williams also set a new school record for RBI in a season with 39, bettering the 35 by Michelle Demmitt in 1999.
The Cardinals (21-17) picked up two runs in the sixth and later had the potential tying run at the plate, but an Elizabeth Milian pop out to Bradshaw at shortstop turned into a double play to end the threat.
Wright State rounded out the scoring in its half of the sixth on a RBI double by Justine Shilt.
Haney and Shilt each had two hits in the second game to lead the Raider offense while in the circle, Ashleigh Jackson (3-5) picked up the win as she allowed just two hits and two walks in five innings with six strikeouts.
Wright State, now 13-16 on the season, hosts Green Bay this weekend in a Horizon League series, starting with a twinbill Saturday at 1:00.
