Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team swept Oakland in its home opener Saturday at Nischwitz Stadium, winning the first game 18-7 before rallying with three in the bottom of the ninth to take the nightcap 7-6.
WSU trailed 1-0 in the opener until the Raiders exploded for eight runs in the third. A Jake Hibberd two-run double started the scoring and after Kody Krizman doubled in another, Tristan Moore singled up the middle to make it 4-1. Zach Tanner was hit by a pitch and Dan Marsh walked with the bases loaded to force in two more runs and Hibberd struck again with a two-run single to round out the inning.
Wright State picked up another run in the fifth as Sam Picchiotti stole home as Tanner stole second and two more in the sixth as Picchiotti had a two-run single to right center. The Raiders tacked on six in the seventh as Krizman had a two-run single, Ryan Ashe an RBI groundout and Corey Davis a three-run homer to left, his first as a Raider.
Casey Henn (1-2) earned the win, going the first 5.2 innings, while Lee Valencheck and Travis Hissong held the Golden Grizzlies to one run over the final 3.1 innings. Offensively, Hibberd, Krizman, Davis and Picchiotti each had three hits while Tanner had two.
The Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two as Davis dropped a double along the left field line to drive in Hibberd and Krizman, only to see Oakland answer with three in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth to go up 6-2.
WSU, though, started on its comeback in the seventh with a pair of runs as Ashe scored on a wild pitch and Picchiotti came in on a Marsh ground out.
That set the stage for ninth as the Raiders loaded the bases with no outs on walks to Ashe and Picchiotti and a bunt single along the third base line by Justin Kopale. Tanner singled off the glove of pitcher Brady Adamek to make it 6-5 and, after Marsh was hit by a pitch to tie it, Hibberd delivered the game-winner, a single through a drawn-in infield to plate Kopale.
Michael Schum (3-1) picked up the win as he struck out the only batter he faced to strand runners on second and third in the ninth. Jordan Marker pitched 5.2 innings of relief, allowing just one run with four strikeouts.
Kopale had three hits to lead WSU in the second game while Tanner, Hibberd and Davis each had two.
Wright State (6-6) hosts Canisius in another twinbill Sunday at 11:00.
