Box Score 2 A pair of ninth-inning rallies allowed the Wright State baseball team to win a pair of games Friday at the Elon Invitational. The Raiders defeated West Virginia 6-5 and Elon 9-4.
WSU started quick against West Virginia, scoring three times in the first. Dan Marsh led off with a bunt single and, after moving up to second on a Zach Tanner sacrifice, Jake Hibberd drove him in with a hit to left. A Ryan Ashe bunt hit plated Hibberd and Kody Krizman scored the final run on an infield hit by Kyle Mossbarger.
The Mountaineers (2-5) scored a run in the third and in the seventh to cut the deficit to 3-2 before taking the lead with three in the eighth. Wright State, though, drew to within one at 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the eighth as Tanner and Hibberd had hits to put runners on the corners and a force out off the bat of Krizman knocked in Tanner.
That set the stage for the bottom of the ninth, which started quietly with a strikeout. Sam Picchiotti, however, drove a 3-2 pitch through the left side for a single and after Corey Davis was hit by a pitch, both advanced into scoring position with a double steal. Justin Kopale then delivered the game-winner, a hit to left to plate both runners.
Michael Schum picked up the win with 1.2 innings of one-hit relief with three strikeouts. Max Friedman went the first seven and pitched to the first batter in the eighth, allowing three runs and five hits while striking out five.
Hibberd paced the Raider offense with three hits while Tanner had two.
WSU again had the early lead in the Elon game by taking advantage of four Phoenix errors in scoring two runs in the third. Elon, however, tied it with a pair in the seventh and went up 4-2 with two more in the eighth.
The Raiders, though, sent 11 batters to the plate in scoring seven in the ninth. Wright State loaded the bases with one out on a Marsh hit along with walks to Tanner and Krizman and Ashe drove in the first run with a single through the left side. Tristan Moore was hit by a pitch to force in a run and a wild pitch gave WSU the lead for good at 5-4.
After a RBI single from Davis, Justin Kopale delivered the big blow, a three-run double to left center.
Schum (2-1) earned his second win of the day, going the final 2.2 innings in relief of Casey Henn, who allowed just three hits in 6.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Marsh had three hits and Kopale two to lead the Raider offense.
Wright State (4-5) faces Elon on Saturday at 5:30 followed West Virginia on Sunday at 10:00.
