Box Score The Wright State baseball team rallied from an early 3-2 deficit with single runs in the sixth and seventh, only to see Cincinnati score four in the bottom of the seventh to win the Joe Nuxhall Classic title 7-4 Wednesday night at Marge Schott Stadium.
WSU scored a run in the first and another in the third, both on Jake Hibberd RBI singles to drive in Sam Picchiotti, but the Bearcats responded with three in the bottom of the third to take a one-run lead.
The Raiders tied it in the sixth as Zach Tanner doubled to center, moved up on a Kyle Mossbarger bunt and came in on a Ryan Ashe sacrifice fly to right. Wright State went back in front 4-3 in the seventh as Picchiotti was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a Dan Marsh bunt and again scored on another RBI hit off the bat of Hibberd.
Cincinnati (17-14), however, scored four runs with two outs in the seventh, the big blow being a two-run triple by Justin Glass, to go up 7-4.
WSU posed a two-out threat of its own in the ninth as Hibberd's fourth hit of the game, sandwiched in between walks to Marsh and Tristan Moore, loaded the bases, but came up empty as a strikeout ended the game.
The Raiders, who outhit the Bearcats 10-8, were led by Hibberd's four hits while Picchiotti and Tanner each had two. Picchiotti also scored three times.
Wright State (20-10) returns to Horizon League play this weekend with a three-game series at UIC. The Raiders and Flames will play a single game on Friday at 7:00 Eastern, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 Dayton time.
