Baseball Sweeps UIC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Wright State used a combination of hitting and pitching to sweep UIC in a Horizon League baseball doubleheader Saturday at Nischwitz Stadium, riding the pitching of Casey Henn for a 4-0 win in the opener before collecting 13 hits in a 10-6 decision in the nightcap.

The Raiders took advantage of three Flame errors to account for all the scoring in the opening two innings. WSU tallied a run in the first without recording a hit thanks in part to a throwing error and a passed ball and used two more errors and a two-run single off the bat of Tristan Moore to go up 4-0 in the second.

That would be all Casey Henn (4-3) would need as the junior righty allowed just four hits in a complete-game shutout, striking out nine and only walking one.

In the second game, Wright State scored a run in the first on a Corey Davis hit to left, only to see UIC tie it with a run of its own in the second.

The Raiders, though, took the lead for good with five in the third. Three straight one-out hits by Jake Hibberd, Moore and Davis loaded the bases and all three scored as Zach Tanner had a two-run single to right and ended up on third after a throwing error. A fielder's choice off the bat of Justin Kopale drove in Tanner and Picchiotti knocked in Dan Marsh with the final run on a hit to center.

A Hibberd home run to left center and a Marsh RBI single added two more runs in the fourth and Hibberd struck again in the fifth with a two-run homer, again to left center, to extend the margin to 10-2. The junior first baseman now has six home runs on the season.

UIC (20-18, 9-7 Horizon) cut into the deficit with three in the sixth and another in the eighth. The Flames had the bases loaded later in the eighth before Michael Schum came on and ended the threat with just one pitch. Schum then picked up his sixth save of the year with a scoreless ninth, protecting the win for Michael Woytek (6-2).

Hibberd had three hits, including the two home runs, with three RBI and three runs scored in the second game while Moore, Davis and Tanner each had two hits.

Wright State (26-12, 10-3 Horizon) has another Horizon League doubleheader on the slate for Sunday as the Raiders travel to Butler for a noon twinbill.
