Baseball Splits at Butler

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wright State baseball team split a doubleheader at Butler Saturday, falling 9-5 in the opener before exploding for a 19-10 win in the second game.

It was all Bulldogs early in game one as they scored all nine of their runs for the game in the first four innings, jumping out to a 9-1 lead.

WSU attempted a comeback with a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the ninth on Jake Hibberd's second home run of the season, but could get no closer.

Tristan Moore led the Wright State offense with three hits while Hibberd and Kody Krizman each had two along with two RBI.  Justin Kopale also had two hits.  On the mound, relievers Luke Mamer, Tanner Howell and Vinny Galiardi combined for 4.2 no-hit, shutout innings with three strikeouts.

The second game also saw Butler take an early lead with three in the first, but the Raiders would answer with six in the second, the big blow being a Moore three-run home run to left center, his first of the year.

The Bulldogs regained the lead at 8-6 with five in the third, only to see WSU go back in front to stay with three in the fourth on RBI singles by Moore, Ryan Ashe and Kopale.  A single by Davis made it 9-6 in the fifth and WSU broke the game open with eight more an inning later.  Michael Timm had a two-run double and Hibberd a two-run single to account for half the runs.

A Timm ground out in the ninth drove in Garrett Gray with Wright State's final run in the ninth.

Jack Van Horn (2-0) picked up the win with 3.2 innings of hitless, scoreless relief, striking out five.  Offensively, Moore had four hits, four RBI and four runs scored, Hibberd, Ashe and Kopale three hits each and Timm two hits, four RBI and three runs scored.

Wright State (10-10, 3-2 Horizon) wraps up the three-game series with the Bulldogs Sunday with a single game at 1:00.
