Baseball Wins Granderson Stadium Opener; Defeats UIC 11-5

Box Score

In the official opening of Curtis Granderson Stadium Thursday afternoon, the Wright State baseball team scored the first 11 runs of the game and went on to an 11-5 win over UIC in Horizon League action.

Granderson, a current New York Mets outfielder, was in attendance to throw out the first pitch and cut the ribbon for the $10 million stadium.

WSU scored an unearned run in the second and extended the lead to 4-0 with three more runs in the third, two of those coming on a Joe Ford hit up the middle.

The Raiders then broke the game open with seven runs in the fourth, sending 13 batters to the plate.  Six of the seven runs came after two outs as Sean Murphy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Ford and Jack Murphy had RBI singles, Jason DeFevers walked to force in a run and Jeff Limbaugh had a two-run single to center.

UIC tallied a run in the fourth and seventh and three in the sixth, but could get no closer as Joey Hoelzel (5-3) picked up the win, going 5.1 innings, with Jack Van Horn pitched the final 3.2 innings.

Ford, Limbaugh and Andrew McCafferty each had two hits to pace the WSU offense, with Ford driving in three and Limbaugh and McCafferty two apiece.

Wright State (19-16, 13-2 Horizon) continues the series with the Flames Friday with a single game starting at 7:05 Eastern.
