Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team scored 16 of its 23 runs in the middle three innings Friday as the Raiders swept a Horizon League doubleheader against Cleveland State at Nischwitz Stadium, taking the opener 10-2 and the nightcap 13-3.
After WSU scored two in the second inning of game one on a bunt single play off the bat of Ryan Ashe, the Raiders added two more in the fourth as Sam Picchiotti tripled in Kyle Mossbarger, who walked, and later scored on a steal play.
The lead grew to 5-0 in the fifth on an unearned run before Wright State broke it open with five in the sixth, the big blow being an opposite-field grand slam to left by Corey Davis.
Casey Henn (3-2) threw six shutout innings to pick up the win, allowing just four hits while striking out six. Joey Hoelzel pitched the final three innings for his first collegiate save.
Offensively, Picchiotti and Zach Tanner each had three hits while Dan Marsh and Tristan Moore each had two.
WSU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the second game on a two-run double down the right field line by Moore and tacked on another in the fourth as Justin Kopale singled in Mossbarger.
The Raiders extended the margin to 8-0 with five in the fifth. Davis led off with his second home run of the day and third of the season, a solo shot to left, and after two Viking errors allowed two to score, Jake Hibberd followed with a two-run single.
Wright State added two more in the sixth and three in the eighth, including a Moore two-run hit, to round out its scoring.
Michael Woytek (4-2), like Henn, threw six shutout innings in earning the win, also allowing four hits while striking out four. Moore finished with three hits and four RBI to pace the Raider offense while Picchiotti, Hibberd, Tanner and Mossbarger each had two hits.
Wright State (14-9, 4-1 Horizon) wraps up the three-game series against Cleveland State with a single game Saturday starting at 1:00.
