Baseball Drops Pair at UIC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wright State baseball team dropped a pair at UIC Sunday in Horizon League action, falling 15-4 in the opener and 8-7 in the nightcap.

The Raiders scored first in the opening game on a RBI ground out by Jake Hibberd, only to see the Flames score twice in the bottom of the frame and once in the third to go up 3-1. WSU cut the deficit to one in the fourth as Sam Picchiotti singled in Kyle Mossbarger, who walked with one out and advanced to third on a Justin Kopale double, but UIC again answered quickly, this time with five runs in the fourth, to build an 8-2 advantage.

The Flames later broke the game open with seven in the seventh. The final two Wright State runs came via the long ball as Corey Davis hit a solo shot in the sixth, his fifth of the season, as did Zach Tanner in the eighth, his third of the year.

Kopale led the Raiders with three hits while Picchiotti, Tristan Moore, Davis and Mossbarger each had two.

UIC (16-14, 6-5 Horizon) led 5-0 after five innings in the second game before WSU began its comeback with four in the sixth. The first two runs came in on a Moore double to left center and after Davis followed with a double of his own to plate Moore, a Ryan Ashe hit up the middle drove in Davis to make it 5-4.

Wright State then went in front with three in the seventh. A Dan Marsh double and a Hibberd walk started the frame and a throwing error on a Moore bunt attempt resulted in a run and runners on second and third. Davis then drove in Hibberd and Moore with a single to left to give the Raiders a 7-5 lead.

That lead, however, was short-lived as the Flames answered with three in the bottom of the inning to go in front for good, the go-ahead run scoring on a balk.

The Raiders had a runner on third in both the eighth and ninth, but could not push the tying run across.

Davis had three hits and three RBI in the nightcap while Marsh had two hits and two runs scored.

Wright State (20-12, 5-3 Horizon) will host Xavier on Tuesday, April 19, at 6:30 before going on the road again next weekend, heading to Milwaukee for a three-game series starting with a single game on Friday, April 22, at 4:00 Eastern.
