Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team split a Horizon League doubleheader Saturday against Cleveland State at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio, defeating the Vikings 3-2 in the opener before dropping the second game 13-11.
The Raiders took the early lead in the opener with a run in the first. Dan Marsh led off with a walk and, after going to second on a Corey Davis bunt, scored as Zach Tanner singled through the left side. WSU made 2-0 in the second on a Davis RBI single and added another in the third as a Ryan Ashe hit up the middle drove in Tristan Moore. Jake Hibberd collected three hits on the day to remain among the national leaders in hits (11th with 83) and batting average (20th at .405).
The Vikings, though, closed to within one in their half of the third with two runs and threatened to tie the game in the sixth as Alex Johnson doubled with one out.
Johnson, however, was thrown out at second for the second out and, despite a double by Zach Tanner, Wright State maintained the 3-2 edge as Raider reliever Michael Schum came in and retired the next batter on a ground out.
Cleveland State then had a one-out single in the seventh, but pinch-hitter Steve Mahler grounded into a double play to end the game.
Henn (6-3) picked up the win by allowing just one earned run in 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. Schum earned his eighth save by pitching the final 1.1 innings.
Tanner and Justin Kopale each had two hits to pace the Raider offense.
WSU looked to be in control early in the second game as the Raiders scored nine runs over the first two innings. A Tanner three-run home run to left, his fourth of the season, highlighted a four-run first and Wright State added five more in the second, two coming on Sam Picchiotti's second homer of the year.
Cleveland State, however, kept pace with three in the first and four in the second and then went in from 10-9 with three more in the third. A Davis RBI single along with an error on the play gave WSU the lead again at 11-10 in the fifth before the Vikings answered with three in bottom of the frame to go in front 13-11.
From there, both teams went scoreless the rest of the way as the Raiders managed just two base runners the final four innings while CSU had four.
Davis had three hits in the second game while Hibberd, Moore, Tanner, Picchiotti and Ashe each had two. On the mound, Jordan Marker threw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits.
Wright State (31-16, 14-6 Horizon) has another road doubleheader on the slate for Sunday as the Raiders face Youngstown State at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio, starting at noon.
